As a golf course designer and keen artist I’ve long been an admirer of Tom Simpson. Architect and artist. Creator of Mortfontaine, Hardelot, Le Pins, Fontenbleau and Cruden Bay among others.

Simpsons design concepts often included an aerial study of the hole but uniquely he would also include an artists impression, be it a watercolour or sketch. It’s a lovely combination and gives the viewer a far better appreciation of what is planned than just an aerial plan which few can properly comprehend. Sadly time constraints and computers have made this type of plan a rarity….such a pity.

A feature of many holes at Pine Valley are the dramatic tee carries, often requiring a long drive over a sea of sand and heath. This became the focus of my painting of the 6th. To add to the drama a late sun cast some lovely shadows across the line of play.
