In more recent times I’ve wanted to spend time on ‘proper’ artwork. As much as I enjoy the aerial renderings and course guides I don’t consider it art…its more graphic design. To me real golf art are the beautiful paintings by Australian Robert (Bob) Wade whom I’m lucky enough to know and of course Harry Rowntree – a children’s book artist who turned his hand to golf course watercolours for Bernard Darwins classic book “Golf Courses of the British Isles’. Along with the modern day watercolour master Joseph Zbukvic they are my inspiration.
I’ve drawn pencil sketches of golf holes for many years but now prefer to use watercolour. The transparent nature of the medium works well for golf courses – better than say oils or acrylic in my opinion. Each painting has been an improvement on the last and hopefully in the not too distant future they will become as popular as my golf course guides.
